I went down to the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon on Saturday morning to help cheer on the many runners.  What an event!  There were over 35,000 runners this year and it was an amazing day.  Great weather, great turnout, overall a great day. I went down to the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon on Saturday morning to help cheer on the many runners.  What an event!  There were over 35,000 runners this year and it was an amazing day.  Great weather, great turnout, overall a great day.

This was my first time attending the event and I was thoroughly impressed.  One of the reasons I went was because of one of our patients.  When I was in our Columbus Doctor Tavel office a few months ago, I was talking to one of our patients who was going to come up to Indianapolis to run in the mini.  As we talked, she informed me that she had run it in the past, but she ran it with her glasses on.  I asked her if she had ever thought about wearing contact lenses and her response was something I hear all the time, “I tried wearing them years ago but didn’t like them.”  When I hear this, my goal is to educate patients on the simple fact that contact lenses have improved dramatically over the years.  The technology has changed and with the newer lenses, specifically silicone hydrogel lenses, the comfort level and wearability of contact lenses has increased substantially.

I recommended that she give it another try and our doctor fit her in the new Focus Dailies Aqua by CIBA Vision after giving her a thorough eye examination.  Focus Dailies Aqua are daily disposable contact lenses that are ideal for people who don’t wear contacts that frequently and want a pair they can put in for a one-day time period.  The great part about these lenses is that they have a blink-activated moisturizing agent that makes wearing contacts much more comforting than when she tried them last.

I followed up with our patient after she ran in the mini and you would have thought Dr. Tavel actually helped her train.  She was so happy with the performance of the Focus Dailies product that she felt it made her that much more able to perform during the race because she wasn’t focused on her sight and vision at all.  I was just happy I could be a part of the race without actually having to run in it!
