Did you know there are more cases of cataracts than glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy combined?  According to Prevent Blindness America, cataracts is the most common cause of vision loss for individuals over the age of 40.

Don’t lose hope! There are four steps you can take to prevent or slow the development of cataracts.

Many people know that cigarettes create health risks for you and those around you.  But did you know that smoking increases your chance of developing cataracts?  Watch how much you drink, too.  Like cigarettes, excess alcohol consumption can pose a number of health risks, one of which is an increased chance of developing cataracts.

Eating right is essential for your eye health.  People with diabetes are at greater risk for developing cataracts.  Indiana eye doctors suggest eating foods high in antioxidants, such as beta-carotene, selenium and vitamins C and E to help prevent cataract development.

Protecting yourself from UV rays is another way to slow down the development of cataracts.  Make sure you wear a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses with Purifier® polarized lens to block those harmful UV rays.

Lastly, make sure you schedule a yearly eye exam with Dr. Tavel.  Regular visits to your Indianapolis eye doctor can detect signs of cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration and other vision disorders.

Don’t wait until your vision is affected – start preventing cataracts today!
