UV exposure is virtually unavoidable.  Most everyone receives at least some UV exposure every day.

The danger lies in the lack of knowledge about the long-term effects of extended UV exposure.  Many people take little action to protect their eyes.

Here’s a reality check: UV exposure is dangerous.  It’s effects are irreversible and can lead to a number of serious diseases.

To understand what happens when you are exposed to UV light, let’s first look at how it works.  On the spectrum of light, visible light is just a small portion. Infrared rays are typically harmless, but UV rays pose serious risks.

Most UV radiation comes from the sun.  Sunlight contains two types of harmful rays.  UVA rays can pass through window glass and penetrate deep into the skin.  They cause premature aging and can suppress the immune system and interfere with the body’s ability to protect itself.  UVB rays are the main cause of sunburn.  Both forms of UV rays can lead to skin cancer.

Only small amounts of UV rays reach the inner eye, but their effects are extremely significant.  The ocular tissues are very sensitive and intense, short-term UV exposure can cause photokeratitis, or sunburn of the eye.  UVA rays can penetrate deep into the eye and damage the retina.

All Indianapolis Optometrists warn of the serious damage caused by extended UV exposure.  Visit Dr. Tavel at any of his 20 convenient locations to learn how you can guard your eyes with lenses like Purifiers®, TnT, and Drivewear among others.

You may not be able to hide from UV rays…but you can protect yourself!
