According to a recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, many Americans over age 40 who experience visual impairment aren’t seeing an eye care professional. The study was conducted in 21 states and sampled over 11,000 adults.
The most common reasons people gave for not seeking assistance were the cost of eye care or lack of insurance and perceived lack of need. Reponses in the “other” category included not knowing an eye doctor or the inability to schedule an appointment.
It’s heartbreaking to read these responses since people over age 40 are at a greater risk for glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and other sight-robbing diseases.
