Come on ladies, own up, we all do it – not washing your make-up off before bed. Sometimes your bed is just too inviting, and the water will just be too cold on your face. So, you skip it and jump right into bed. Little did you know that the consequences are deeper than the next day facial scrub.

According to Eyecare 2020, sleeping in your makeup can have negative effects on your skin, production of acne, and the health and clarity of your vision. We all knew that we could have a bad skin day after forgetting to wash off that foundation, but how does it affect your vision?

Mascara wands cause the most eye-related makeup injuries!

If you wear contacts, makeup can cause irritation and dry eyes. Additionally, mascara can leave deposits on the surfaces of your eyeballs, which would prevent your contact lenses from sitting directly on your eye. Makeup can give you itchy, bloodshot eyes, an allergic reaction, a full eye infection, or eye pink eye.

If all this can happen over the course of your day, think about what happens during the night. All the tossing and turning will smudge your makeup – the proof is probably on your pillows the next day. When you sleep with your makeup on, you are spreading all of the germs all over your bed. Lucky for the germs, your body creates the perfect breeding temperature. They are there to stay, until the next time you wash your sheets.

Finally, you wear makeup to make yourself pretty. Sleeping in it can have the opposite effect. Leaving mascara on will dry out your lashes and make them brittle – leaving them more prone to thinning and falling out. Sleeping in foundation can clog your pores and give you acne.

So ladies, just wash your face. Two to three minutes before bed and you will be looking fresh the next day. If you do get an eye infection or pink eye, contact your optometrist. Dr Tavel has 20 locations and convenient hours – don’t let it get worse!
