If you are like most of us in the Midwest, then you have probably had your fill of ice, snow and cold weather. This past February produced one of the worst ice storms that Indiana has seen in a long time.  But here recently temperatures have started to rise which is a good sign that spring is on its way.

With the weather changing comes an urge to come out of hibernation and become more recreational, which means outdoor sports, vacationing and spending more time in the sun. Not to mention that on Sunday, March 13 we will switch to Daylight Savings Time and “spring forward,” gaining another hour of sunlight.

With this in mind, we want to make sure that we are protecting our eyes at all times as we head outside. According to geteyesmart.org, tens of thousands of sports and recreation-related eye injuries occur each year and of these total injuries 90% are preventable through use of appropriate protective eyewear.

High-risk sports lend themselves to more frequent eye injuries in all ages such as baseball, basketball and racquet sports. Other sports such as boxing and full-contact martial arts pose an extremely high risk of serious and even blinding eye injuries.

In most sports including baseball, basketball, soccer, racquet sports, ice hockey, lacrosse, safety glasses or goggles with polycarbonate lenses should be worn at all times. Polycarbonate lenses are strong, shatterproof and lightweight.

At Dr. Tavel Family Eye Care we offer a wide range of high performance eyewear, goggles and sports glasses such as our Recs Specs, the world’s leading brand of high quality protective eyewear designed specifically for sporting applications.

Whether you are planning on playing professional sports or simply playing for recreation this spring, be sure that your eyes are protected at all times be it with protective sports gear or sunglasses with UV protection.
