I have a friend who recently purchased glasses from an online retailer. He did it to save time and money but in my opinion, he compromised many other important factors in the process.

I understand the convenience of online shopping; in fact, I do it all the time. I appreciate the chance to shop around without driving across town to five different stores. I’m not advising you to never shop online, I’m just suggesting it’s not the appropriate method for all purchases.

There are certain things you need to consider when purchasing glasses, because every pair is custom made. There are so many types of designs and materials to choose from. But since everyone’s heads and eyes are different, it’s best to have an optician take measurements of all your features to find the frame and lens combination that works for you.

You also may not understand all the optical lingo (like polycarbonate, high index or anti-reflective coating). A certified optician can explain the benefits of each of these elements to you and help you make an educated decision.

Not only is it important that your glasses have all the necessary features, but they must also look good! In my friend’s case, he was rather disappointed at how the glasses looked on his face. He liked the virtual try-on feature from the optical website, but putting them on in person was much different! Shopping in a retail store allows you to try on an endless amount of frames to find the one that flatters your face the most.

I understand that online bargains can be very attractive, but when it comes to purchasing your glasses, I suggest visiting your Indiana eye doctor to find the best eyewear for you.
