AMD, or age-related macular degeneration, is a leading cause of vision loss for Americans age 65 and older. That’s why Prevent Blindness America focuses on creating awareness on the topic during the month of February.

As you age, your risk for AMD increases. But you can take steps to help prevent loss of sight from AMD. If you are 65 or older, you should:

  • Visit your Indiana eye doctor regularly – If you are 65 or older, you should get a complete (dilated) eye exam every one or two years, even if you have no problem seeing well.
  • Learn and watch for the signs and symptoms of AMD – If you have AMD you may notice straight lines appear wavy, type appears blurry, and dark or empty spaces block your vision.
  • Take care of yourself – Good health is important! Make sure you avoid smoking, eat healthy, and stay active.
