Every school year, kids get excited to reunite with their friends, but also nervous to be accepted by new ones. A child returning to school with a  pair of new glasses may trigger peers’ curiosity.

According to mesvision.com, one out of every four children has a vision problems. More alarming, is the reported 48 percent of parents with children under 12 who have never taken their child to an eye care professional. While teasing and bullying is a common fear for both child and parent, one should focus on areas of competence, emotional support, social approval, achievement, and coping.

Greatschools.org lists the following to help your child deal with change:

  • Talk to your child about what they are the best at doing.
  • Promote positive activities:  singing, dancing, and athletics. What makes your child feel good?
  • Introduce your child to social situations:  sleepovers with friends, clubs and other activities.
  • Have your child learn new skills to produce achievement and competence.
  • Explain the necessity for their glasses. Explain how to cope with the new change instead of avoiding it. This provides necessary emotional support without focusing on negative aspects of wearing glasses.

Parents:  Beat the statistic. Don’t be part of the 48 percent! Visit a Dr. Tavel location today and enjoy our new Kid’s Package until August 15th.
