Eyeglasses No More?

You always want what you can’t or don’t need to have, right?  I have always wanted to wear glasses and buy eye glasses to wear on various occasions to update my ‘look.’  I even wore lens-less glasses as a 6th grader to get that “cool” look I aspired on the playground (not sure how cool that actually was!).  But I am blessed to have 20/20 vision allowing me to see clearly both distances and up-close so I don’t need glasses or contact lenses.  Many ...

Many American’s do need glasses though specifically to correct myopia or short-sightedness which is when distant objects are blurred.

A recent BBC article “Could glasses soon be history?” comments on past stigmas with glasses with nicknames like “four-eyes” and offers those who don’t like or want to wear eye glasses hope as scientists in London have found a gene that causes myopia.  According to the article, scientists believe that drugs can be created to correct myopia in about 10 years which could mean no more “four-eyes” comments for those affected.

A frame I would love to wear! Glasses could be omitted from a few people’s ‘looks’ with this new development but they aren’t going anywhere.  This treatment wouldn’t solve presbyopia (inability to focus on near objects) or other visual impairments making glasses highly needed especially as we age.  Also, glasses make quite the fashion statement (like I did on the playground) as celebs in pop-culture sport a variety of looks be it rimless styles or the increasingly popular “geek” look.  Eyeglasses no more?  For some in the future yes but I think eyeglasses more!
