There are several areas around your home where you may not suspect your child could be harmed. But there are simple ways to reduce your child’s risk of sustaining an eye injury.

Make sure the toys your child uses are appropriate. Toys that fire projectiles pose a danger to kids, especially those under five.

Your child could be seriously injured if he or she falls on a toy. Secure rugs, cords and other tripping hazards that might cause your child to lose his or her balance.

When your child is outside, outfit them with kid-friendly sunglasses. Not only do they block the sun’s harmful rays, but sunglasses also prevent foreign objects from entering your child’s eyes.

Keep all “grown-up tools” out of your child’s reach. This includes garden tools, knives and forks, scissors and all household products like detergents, paints and glues.

In addition to keeping your child safe from household eye injuries, make sure they receive a yearly comprehensive eye exam from an Indiana optometrist to ensure he or she is on the path to good eye health!
