Did you know that your morning cup of coffee can affect the comfort of your contact lenses? That’s right… consuming a large amount of caffeine or alcohol can cause dry eyes! But dry eyes aren’t a reason to stop wearing contacts. Contact lenses have many benefits including convenience and appearance. Those are two reasons I’ve been wearing them since high school. But at times I’ve experienced discomfort with my lenses. Simple changes have helped solve those issues.

To combat dry eyes, be sure to drink enough water (experts recommend eight 8-ounce glasses per day) as part of a healthy diet. Your eye care doctor may also recommend flaxseed oil or other eye supplements to improve tear quality.

Certain medications can also increase dry eyes. Eye care doctors like Dr. Tavel and his board certified associates suggest using over-the-counter eye drops as a short-term solution. For ongoing situations though your doctor may recommend eye supplements.

Most of my dry eye symptoms occur at the end of the day. Contact lens discomfort at the end of the day is a common complaint amongst lens wearers. Ask your eye care doctor about lenses designed to allow greater amounts of oxygen to the eye. Switching from soft lenses to gas permeable ones may also help.

Whatever discomfort issue you may encounter, seek help from an experienced eye care doctor like Dr. Tavel and his board certified associates.  Dry eyes don’t have to dry you out!
