I think it’s appropriate that May is deemed UV Awareness Month by Prevent Blindness America (PBA). As the temperature goes up and the flowers continue to bloom, the sunshine is surely on its way (at least I hope so!).

If you’re like me, you can’t wait to get outside and enjoy the warmer weather. I’ve always been aware of the dangers of the sun on my skin, but until recently I wasn’t aware of the sun’s effect on my eyesight. It turns out I’m not alone in my ignorance. According to PBA, more than eight out of 10 Americans understand that extended UV exposure can cause skin cancer, but only one out of 10 know it can harm your eyes. To make it worse, 20 percent believe UV damage is reversible. That is false!

Indiana eye care doctors say the lack of knowledge about UV exposure means people aren’t taking the appropriate precautions to protect their eyes. Less than half of Americans get a regular eye exam which can detect and prevent vision problems and eye disease. Four out of 10 don’t wear UV-blocking eyewear during the winter months when UV rays still threaten.

Awareness may be low, but the risk continues to increase. More than 30 million Americans suffer from eye diseases linked to prolonged UV exposure.

Now that you know how important UV eye protection is, schedule an appointment with Dr. Tavel and his board certified associates today!
