A few co-workers and I went out to lunch the other day to one of our favorite lunch-spots.  As we were leaving I realized I didn’t have my sunglasses.  It was a grey and overcast day outside and one of my co-workers said not to worry I wouldn’t need them because it was so cloudy.  Her answer is an answer I myself have given to others before but I now know that sunglasses are needed even on grey days.

My co-worker was not alone in her reply about sunglasses on a grey day as a vast majority of us too are unaware that over 90% of UV rays still penetrate in overcast skies and can thus harm our eye sight.  This is a fact I have learned while here at Dr. Tavel and talking with our Indianapolis eye doctors about proper eye wear in all conditions.   A SelectSpecs.com survey found that most people don’t know about the power of UV radiation even in grey skies and thus don’t think we need sunglasses on cloudy days.

This is a myth of sorts that needs to be broken as sunglasses are needed on almost any kind of day to protect our vision from harmful UV rays.  UV rays are linked to our vision as cataracts, macular degeneration, and other eye diseases result from over exposure to our eyes as described by Allaboutvision.com.  SelectSpecs.com found that half of those participating in the survey didn’t think sunglasses are needed in the winter.  This couldn’t be farther from the truth!  Glare from the sun hitting snow and even on grey winter days UV rays exist and can harm our eyes if we do not protect them appropriately.

So the other day I did take the extra minute to find my sunglasses before we left for lunch.  Knowing that making a habit such as this will protect my eyes in the long run.  I wear a few styles of sunglasses for fashion purposes as I think they are a fun accessory to add to any outfit and I now know they are a needed one.  My favorite pair of shades though is my pair with Dr. Tavel Purifier polarized lenses as these lenses are the only ones to completely eliminate glare on the sunny days when I wear them and even on cloudy days.  So remember with me to wear your shades even on grey days!
