Lenses

When it comes to eyewear, we often pay more attention to our frame choice than our lens selection. Because the lenses are the custom windows through which you will see the world, they deserve your consideration! Not only will your personalized lenses correct and protect your vision, but they can enhance your sight as well. Here we outline the most common lens types and latest technologies to consider during your visit with Dr. Tavel.

Single Vision

Lens - Single Vision

These basic lenses offer the same prescription and technology across the whole lens. This is the lens type that often corrects near and farsightedness.

Multi/Bifocal

Lens - Multi/Bifocal

A lens that corrects both near and far vision, as separated by a visible line in the lens. The top enables the wearer to see distant objects, and the bottom of the lens enables you to see close objects (for example, a menu or a book). You can also opt for a trifocal lens. A trifocal lens includes three visible lines, and enables the viewer to see at near, intermediate, and far distances.

Progressives

Lens - Progressives

Sometimes referred to as a no-line lens, a progressive lens allows for smooth, clear vision as your eye progresses from looking far away, to looking at something up close. Unlike a multifocal, there are no “jumps” from one section of correction to the next. Instead, this lens offers clear vision at every distance. Like a multifocal, a progressive lens provides vision correction at near, intermediate and far distancesHowever, it is a more aesthetically pleasing and technologically advanced lens option. Our trained opticians will teach you how to use this lens so you get the best vision possible.

Anti-Fatigue

Lens - Anti-Fatigue

In today’s digital world, it is important to both protect your eyes and keep them comfortable during screen time. To help prevent digital eye strain, we recommend lenses that reduce exposure to harmful blue light to help your eyes work smarter, not harder. Additionally, we offer lenses with accommodative relief – i.e. little added boost to your prescription – in the lower portion of lens to help prevent tired eyes when working with devices.

Clarifier™

Lens - Clarifier™

Dr. Tavel always recommends adding an anti-reflective coating to your lensesThis coating can improve vision, reduce eye strain and make your eyeglasses appear more aesthetically pleasing. Clarifier™ no-glare coating works by eliminating reflections from both the front and back sides of your lenses. When you remove reflection – otherwise known as glare  you optimize your visual acuity with fewer distractions. This makes our Clarifier™ no-glare coating ideal for night driving.

Additionally, anti-glare coatings improve the look of your lenses, too, making them appear nearly invisible within your frame.

Transitions®

Lens - Transitions®

Generically referred to as photochromic lensesTransitions® lenses offer patients the benefit of clear lenses indoors, and they automatically darken their tint outdoors to keep eyes comfortable and protectedPowered primarily by UV exposure, Transitions® lenses adapt seamlessly to any light to provide always-on protection. They block 100% of UV light and reduce exposure to harmful blue light indoors and out. With a variety of lifestyle products available in seven stylish colors, Transitions® lenses are ideal for patients who want to add colorful flair to the lenses, those with light sensitivity, and those who want to avoid the hassle of swapping glasses and sunglasses while on the go. Purifier™

Lens - Purifier™

When it comes to sunglassesour polarized lenses offer maximum protection from the sun’s harmful rays. Purifier® Polarized lenses make objects appear sharper and clearer by not only eliminating glare and protecting your eyes from harmful UV rays, but also because they enhance colors and accentuate contrast and acuity.

Conventional sunglasses only reduce the amount of light that is transmitted through the lens.  Since light travels in every direction, when it hits a surface it creates a reflection.  The reflected waves vibrate in a horizontal direction causing glare.  Similar to venetian blinds, Purifier Polarized lenses deflect blinding light and harsh glare by absorbing the scattered light waves and solely transmitting light from one direction. These lenses improve visual acuity and depth perception, reduce squinting and unnecessary strain to the eyes.

Sunglasses

Lens - Sunglasses

Traditional sunglass lenses are tinted to darker shades – traditionally brown or gray – in order to reduce the amount of light that can reach the eye. However with so many colors, differing levels of protection, and a variety of lens technologies available, it’s best to ask your eye care provider for advice when choosing sunglasses. Different lens tints, or colors, can help you see better in certain conditions, and our experts can fit you with the lenses that are best suited for your needsDr. Tavel is also an exclusive retailer for premium sun products from top-tier brands including Maui Jim, OakleyCosta Del Mar, and more.

Lens Materials

When choosing the right lens, the lens material you choose matters. While any prescription can be manufactured with a standard plastic lens, strong prescriptions can look thicker and weigh more on your face when made in plastic. Dr. Tavel recommends all patients choose Polycarbonate lenses, which are impact-resistance and lighter than standard plastic, or hi-index plastic lenses, which offer the thinnest and lightest lens options for a more aesthetically pleasing and comfortable visual experience.

Kids Lenses

If your child requires vision correction, consider Dr. Tavel’s kids’ package: polycarbonate lenses with anti-glare and scratch-resistant coatings, plus a one-year warranty. Available for children 17 and younger, our kids’ package is designed to withstand your child’s rough-and-tumble lifestyle, giving parents the peace of mind needed to let kids be kids.  These impact-resistant lenses are not only thinner and lighter than a standard lens, but they are also designed to eliminate distracting and uncomfortable glare both in the classroom and on the playground. At Dr. Tavel, we also know accidents happen. If your child damages their lenses, we’ll replace them for you up to three times per year. Ask a Dr. Tavel team member for details.
