Nearsightedness is when distant objects appear blurred because the eyes focus incorrectly. You can see near objects clearly, but tend to squint when viewing objects far away. Nearsightedness is also referred to as myopia which comes from two Greek words meaning shut and eye. Makes sense, right?

Nearsightedness occurs when the length of the eye is greater than the optical length. The condition usually develops rapidly in growing school-aged children and teenagers and stops progressing as you hit your early twenties. You’re more likely to develop nearsightedness if you have a family history of it, but it affects males and females equally.

Your child may suffer from nearsightedness if he or she can’t read the blackboard but can easily read a book. They may hold the book very close to them or sit close to the television, too. If this occurs, contact your Indiana eye care doctor for a comprehensive eye exam.

You can compensate for nearsightedness by wearing glasses or contact lenses. There is no way to prevent nearsightedness, but it can be easily remedied with a visit to see Dr. Tavel and his board certified associates.
