Buying glasses for your child can be a colossal hassle. There are a ton of options for kids, but what is the right choice? Really, the options are almost infinite. Ultimately, it comes down to two issues:

  1. What is your child willing to wear?
  2. What will be durable enough to withstand sports, rough-housing, and general rowdiness?

Is it a catch 22, or can both goals be accomplished?

Buying glasses for your child is pointless if they won’t even wear them. Most kids get a little bit of teasing for wearing glasses, especially the first time they wear them. The bottom line is: if they aren’t cool, they won’t wear them. Use fashion forward frames like Geek Eyewear and Go Green as an incentive to wear the glasses. Cool glasses make for a cool kid.

Does looking cool mean super-fragile eyewear? Nope. A lot of kid’s frames have special spring hinges that allow the temples to flex outward without causing damages. After you and your child have decided on a stylish frame, you can pick durable lenses. For kids, I always recommend polycarbonate lenses. It is a lightweight material and considerably more impact-resistant that other lens materials. Polycarbonate lenses will not shatter if they receive a blow, a risk you take with glass or plastic lenses.

Clearly, you don’t have to choose between making your child happy and ensuring their eyewear will last. You want to make sure your child will wear the glasses and that they will won’t break!
