Have you seen the TV commercial for the new 3-D smartphones? These new high-tech devices will probably hurt your wallet …but they can hurt your eyes, too.

A recent study found that using 3-D devices for an extended period of time causes visual discomfort, fatigue and headaches. This is caused by your eye’s need to focus on the screen while also adjusting to the distance of the content.

When viewing a 3-D device, your eyes must adjust to accommodate the distance of the screen. To perform the study, the doctors placed content in front and behind the screen and tested the discomfort level with each position. They discovered that with devices viewed at a short distance content (smartphones) placed in front of the screen was less comfortable. On the reserve, content placed at a long distance (movie screens) was less comfortable placed behind the screen.

The study concludes that viewing 3-D material affects your eyes differently depending how close the device is to you. Your Indiana eye doctor suggests educating yourself on the latest technology before you make a big purchase.
