I am not a Black Friday shopper, are you?  The holidays bring much cheer, sometimes stress, and traditions.  Thanksgiving is the start of many of these traditions with pizza or take-out the Wednesday before, a running race the day of, watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, and of course shopping on Black Friday.

I participate in all of these traditions except the last.   I do not go out with the crowds and shop for deals on Black Friday.  Many of my friends and co-workers make Black Friday shopping a special tradition, something they do every year.  Better yet, are you a cyber-shopper on the Monday after Thanksgiving, the biggest day for online shopping?  Again I am not.

These traditions of holiday shopping are what large retailers look to each year with hope for many customers and transactions. But what about smaller retailers, the local companies in our communities?  Although they may have some extra foot traffic on Black Friday, that is not always the case.  It is  for these companies that hire locally and benefit the local economy (thus community) AMEX has declared Saturday, November 27 “Small Business Saturday.” Small Business Saturday

This is the first day of its kind where it is encouraged to shop at local small businesses. Customer service is typically a high priority for smaller businesses which you can’t always find at a larger retailer.  Dr. Tavel Family Eye Care is an Indiana small business with outstanding patient experience as the heart of what we do.  Being family owned and in 20 Indiana communities Dr. Tavel fits as a small business to visit on Saturday, November 27.  Find a location in your community.

Better yet, if you are an American Express cardholder, fill out this form to receive $25 back once you spend $25 or more at a small business on Saturday. A win-win shopping situation for both you and the small business like Dr. Tavel.  Think of the small businesses in your town or community and visit them on Saturday to help give back to the place you call home.  This is a Thanksgiving tradition I am going to start.
