Sitting at your computer all day can leave your eyes feeling tired and dry. You may experience fatigue, decreased productivity or more work errors.

Last week I shared five tips to reduce your risk of computer eye strain and other common symptoms of computer vision syndrome. Here are five more tips from AllAboutVision.com:

1. Blink more often

Blinking moistens your eyes to prevent dryness and irritation. According to studies, people blink five times less than normal when working at a computer. AllAboutVision.com suggests reducing your risk of dry eyes during computer use by trying this exercise: Every 20 minutes, blink 10 times by closing your eyes as if falling asleep (very slowly). This will help rewet your eyes.

2. Exercise your eyes

Have you heard of the 20-20-20 rule? Every 20 minutes look away from your computer at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Doing so relaxes the muscles around your eyes to prevent fatigue.

3. Take frequent breaks

Taking five minute “mini-breaks” throughout the day will help alleviate neck, back and shoulder pain caused by extensive computer use. Stand up, move about and stretch your body!

4. Modify your workstation

Going back and forth between a printed paper and your computer screen causes strain on your eyes. Place a stand adjacent to your monitor for printer papers and make sure it’s properly lit. Adjusting your workstation and chair to the correct height will improve your posture.

5. Consider computer eyewear

Dr. Tavel can create customized computer glasses for you! Ask your Indiana optometrist about anti-fatigue lens or the new Kodak MonitorView lens. Kodak MonitorView lenses are designed for near task activities like imputing data and web browsing.

Finding the solution to symptoms of computer vision syndrome is easier than you think. Simple changes to your environment and a few lifestyle adjustments will have your eyes feeling refreshed in no time!
